Ravanne & sega tipik music

A ravanne playing class

Passionate about music? Then you will love discovering the typical Mauritian sega and its iconic musical instrument, the ravanne.

Daniella Bastien, a talented poet who is a master player of ravanne, will welcome you into her house for a two hour session. With her, you will be introduced to this peculiar instrument made from the skin of a kabri (goat).

Exploring the history of sega and its evolution is a thrilling experience. Particularly that of the slavery days, when this particular music was born. Daniella invites you to travel back in time to the different periods of Mauritian history. The melodies and lyrics of sega bear indeed testimony to the nation’s social and political evolution. Gathered around some Mauritian tea, we will tell you about the evolution of Mauritian sega and one step in particular: its ranking on the list of UNESCO World Heritage.

In her garden in Rose-Hill, you will also learn to "bat Ravann" - the basics of handling this instrument. She will also have you listen to the popular songs of the great artists of the genre!

Experience

Unique experience

The Ravanne lesson with Daniella was a truly unique experience. Daniella is not only a impressive musician who has deep knowledge of the Ravanne, Sega, and the history of music of Mauritius but she is also a capable and patient teacher. Welcoming us in her home, she taught us the basic rhythm patterns of Sega on the Ravanne, which really helped us to understand and get a feeling for the local music. Days after, we still continued to tap the rhythms we learned with Danielle on everything available (lacking our own Ravanne) and were always thrilled when we recognized the patterns in other songs. Truly opened our ears! Read more reviews...
