Bharatanātyam, one of India's eight recognised classical dance styles, is today the most widely practised one throughout the world. It went through a tumultuous history for over 2000 years from the times when kings ruled the great Peninsula, passing though British colonisation when it nearly disappeared, to what it is today.

Being originally performed by Devadasis (literally translated as servants of Gods), it is in the magnificent temples of Tamil Nadu that this dance form evolved.

The colorful costumes, ornaments and make up are often described as a reflection of the luring statues seen in temples.

The picturesque poses, intricate movements and detailed facial expressions require several years of learning and practice. However, Bharatanātyam is not just a regular dance form, it is also considered to be a medium for spiritual attainment just like other art forms of India.
