A taste of history

History, street food and heritage of Port-Louis

Situated at the confluence of Asia, Africa and Europe, Mauritius has always held a strategic position on the Indian Ocean’s maritime routes. Port-Louis, an important commercial port since 1721, bears testimony to this rich and eventful history.

This unique tour reveals our cosmopolitan cultural heritage. It is an historical & cultural exploration, dotted with food tasting stops.

Different stories are being told in distinct neighbourhoods. The heady scent of the spice quarters of Gujerati influence, the respite offered by Port-Louis' serene places of worship from the streets' constant buzz and crowds, the colourful streets of Chinatown… There are so many facets to Port-Louis : history, architecture, food, old trades, unknown quaint places, local customs... Join us and enjoy a different outlook on the city!

Along the way, we will tell you about the rich culture of the city and recount the fascinating stories of the inhabitants while sampling the street food. You will taste an assortment of typical Mauritian dishes: steamed dumplings, dholl puri - yellow crepes filled with spicy vegetables, gato pima, sweet vanilla black tea… You will also get a chance to meet warm Port-Louisians and listen to their stories.

A morning to uncover the exciting history and subtle flavours of Mauritian culture.

You too will quickly fall for our vibrant city and its people!

Absolutely brilliant experience!

This tour made Mauritius come alive for me- it takes you to the heart of the culture, people, and food on this diverse island. The experience is perfectly woven around the narrative of Mauritius's history- as well as the history of the different groups of people who came to the island (the guides are hugely knowledgable about this). Living in Mauritius we have a lot of exposure to the 'touristic' side of things, but not a lot of exposure to authentic Mauritius and it's people. It is truly an unmissable, unbeatable experience. Mauritius

Food for your brain and your belly!

What a great morning out in the thriving city of Port Louis. I have spent many weeks in Port Louis, but on this tour I found places that I would never had found, places I would NEVER have been brave enough to enter on my own, and got out of my comfort zone by being offered foods that I would never have ordered - all peppered with really relevant, contextual history of the Mauritius and the City. I could not recommend highly enough. Read more reviews...
